Had a friend who needed a cooking solution for out here and I was bored so I thought I would try to make my first rocket stove. Looked at some designs online but most seemed flawed in one way or another so I took pieces and parts from different designs and mixed it up with […]
I’ve never been a huge fan of cats but when we got settled out here I knew I wanted something to help keep the rodents down and I like to avoid poisons if I can help it because of its effect on other wildlife. So we figured we would get a couple of barn cats […]
The girls are doing really well these days. Everyone seems pretty happy and healthy. Their brooder started to get a little rank so we needed to get them relocated into something else so we could clean it. Unfortunately we really didn’t have anything so I went searching and found the “Peck & Play” online. It […]
We’ve really been getting the itch to play around with the local rock lately so we’ve decided to just jump in and get some things done. It all started with the dry stack garden wall: But we couldn’t stop there. And we didn’t really want anything else dry stacked so we started gathering materials […]
Been really bad about updating the blog with all that’s been going on so here is a quick homestead update – in picture form. In summary – we’ve been getting stuff done.
I’ve got another homestead update coming here soon but I wanted to share this little story out here. About 3 weeks ago I was out messing around near the burn barrel when I looked down at the ground and noticed this in the pile of leftovers from the last burn. My heart just kinda sank […]
Well our main pond for supplying the house is now complete. It didn’t end up being nearly as big as we wanted but the time that had already gone into it was too much and to go bigger was going to be a substantial investment. Since we need the dozer for other things right now […]
We’re on day 2 of the new “house” pond construction. Our dozer operator got his start yesterday up in the arroyo behind the house. As usual these guys work hard and fast. Within a couple of hours we’re dug down deep and they’re ready to lay the pipe that will act as the primary spillway […]
Just wanted to post another homestead update since I haven’t put one up in a while. The big news over the last few days has been RAIN. I hate to be out here cheering for hurricanes and tropical storms because they kinda suck for others but this Hurricane Manuel has served us well this week. […]
Well, I decided it was time to start making homemade tortillas. We go through them so fast, it seemed like it would be more cost effective, and not to mention way healthier, to make them myself, rather than to keep on buying them. I searched the internet and pretty much found the same “general” tortilla […]
Well, I found out at the beginning of the week that our community garden was going to be having a class on canning apples / applesauce. We hadn’t done apples yet, so I thought this would be a great learning opportunity for the girls and I. Plus we’d get to meet some new people in […]
It’s been a wild couple of days. The chicks arrived a day early so we got busy unpacking them. They all settled in pretty quick and seem to be enjoying the brooder. Mittens the kitten wrangler points out the chick feed to this Rhode Island Red. We lost one over night… (NOT […]
We have an unlimited supply of black sand out here and it will be used for both chicken coop litter and concrete projects we are working on. Hauling it to where you need it is the fun part…(that begins tomorrow)
Chicken brooder is coming along. Just need to build and install the top for it tomorrow. Cutting it short today to spend some time with new friends who recently moved out here.
